“One volume sketchbook with 32 pages. The inside front cover inscribed: “Willard L. Metcalf”; inside back cover inscribed: “There are certainly not so many men of large fortune in this world as there are pretty women to deserve them.” This sketchbook contains images of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Mexico, and Southwest environs, as well as figure studies, both bust portraits and full-length figures in graphite, watercolor, gauche, and ink wash. Seven pages have images on both their fronts and versos; another seven pages are blank.
Images include: twelve portrait bust, six of which are identified as specific individuals (including Native American Kesh-pah-hâi) and seventeen full-length figures studies (several are dated either April or June 1882).
