1774-75: “Wright traveled to Italy rather late in his career, arriving in Rome in 1774. The Met holds two sketchbooks from his Italian sojourn, this one and a larger example, both filled primarily with wash drawings of landscapes and Roman ruins. Although he had established his reputation as a painter of portraits and figural groups, upon his return to England, Wright increasingly turned to landscape as a subject.”
