Rome, 1742: “Sketchbook I of III by João Glama Ströberle is bound in boards covered with vellum and features full-page drawings with scenes from the Old Testament and Ovid’s Metamorphoses. Other compositions include a head and torso of the crucified Christ and a page of Egyptian hieroglyphs.
On the verso of the title leaf, Glama Ströberle explains that he intended to record in this book his initial thoughts and illustrate the rules set by his two masters in Rome. The drawings include manuscript captions documenting the artistic training Glama Ströberle received, with the painter noting in several compositions the modifications and corrections requested by his masters.”
